Resulting from a long process of reflection around the notion of identity, the series The Gaze of the Blind questions the condition of the blind by means of a human and very sensitive aesthetic. In an experimental approach and largely influenced by studies of psychology, Georges Pacheco uses photography as a tool for understanding and knowing others and oneself by studying the self-portrait which enigmatically imposes itself as the assured link between inside and outside. Besides, don’t we say that the face is the reflection of the soul?
To do this, George Pacheco developed a simple device and clear instructions: “consider this photo shoot as a moment of total freedom, take your time and express what you want”. With these words, he invites the visually impaired to participate in his research by activating a small bulb connected to the camera to take self-photograph and realize their portrait. In this face to face with oneself, Georges Pacheco slips away in favor of the blind who, left alone, free themselves from their status as a model to become, for the time of a shot, the only photographer. Models, photographers, but also photographic objects and subjects.
